REPORT OF THE JOINT COMMITTEE ON THE CONDUCT OF THE WAR
    - 9 Volumes including a thorough Broadfoot Index; Introduction by Gary Gallagher
The original set is uncommon and does not appear in good condition, as the original paper and binding were of poor quality; also there was no index, just a listing of contents.  These shortcomings have been remedied in this edition.
"The Committee's Reports offer readers a prodigious amount of testimony that sheds light on Gettysburg, many other major campaigns, most of the principal generals of the Union high command, and behind-the-scenes politics that shaped prosecution of the Union war effort.  The reprinting . . . with a full new index and a simplified numbering system for the volumes gives modern students easy access to one of the great printed collections of firsthand testimony from leading participants in the conflict."

    47th Regt. Massachusetts Infantry

Forty-seventh Infantry.__Col., Lucius B. Marsh; Lieut.-Col., Albert Stickney; Maj., Austin S. Cushman.  This organization, commonly known as the "Merchants’ Guards," rendezvoused at Camp Edwin M. Stanton, Boxford, and was raised through the efforts of Lucius B. Marsh, a prominent Boston merchant, who became its colonel.  The several companies were gradually filled during the autumn of 1862 and were all mustered in for nine months’ service by Nov. 7.  On the 11th the regiment moved to Camp Meigs, Readville.  It suffered much from desertions before leaving the state, the records showing that it lost 225 men in this way.  Its total enrolment was 897, consisting of 42 officers and 855 enlisted men.  Its losses during service were 1 man killed and 1 officer and 33 enlisted men who died by accident or disease.  On Nov. 29 it was ordered to New York to join the Banks expedition then being organized.  After some delay at Long island, it embarked for New Orleans and reached there on Dec. 31.  It was first ordered to Carrollton, where it remained until Jan. 11, 1863, when it returned to New Orleans and served until in March at the U. S. barracks and Louisiana lower cotton press.  Several companies were detailed for special service, Co. B serving throughout its term as guard for commissary and ordnance stores at New Orleans, and Co. E being detailed for provost duty at Thibodeaux.  The regiment was reunited on March 12 (with the exception of Co. B), when it was ordered to the Metaire race-course and on May 19 to Camp Parapet.  Here Col. Marsh relieved Gen. Dorr in command of the post, made up of artillery detachments and other troops and guarding a line of defenses extending some 30 miles.  This post was occupied by the regiment until the end of its term of service.  While here, Col. Marsh recruited a company of negroes for service in the swamps.  This company was the nucleus of the 2nd La. Engineers, recruited from the contraband camp, and its officers were largely furnished by the 47th Mass.  The regiment left Carrollton on Aug. 5, to return home, going by way of Cairo, Ill., and reaching Boston on the 18th.  It was mustered out at Readville, Sept. 1, 1863.  It was not once in action and had only 1 man killed (June 28, by guerrillas).

FOURTEEN HUNDRED AND NINETY-ONE DAYS IN THE CONFEDERATE ARMY

  • Wilmington: Broadfoot Publishing Company, 1988.  336 pages; 85 photos & illustrations; tipped-in photograph; laid-in manuscript page; 3 new maps; type entirely reset; index; bound in select leather and fine bookcloth; 8 1/2 x 11
  • A LIMITED, NUMBERED EDITION OF 150 COPIES!    Just a few copies left!
    .
    W. W. Heartsill's 1491 Days in the Confederate Army is one of the most unusual narratives of its kind ever printed. Using an Octavo Novelty Press, Heartsill printed the book himself after the war during his spare time while working at his grocery store. Setting and printing one page at a time, it took seven months to complete the 265-page book. The result was a first edition of only 100 copies and a promise from the author-printer never to attempt the feat again. True to his word, Heartsill's book is one of the rarest of Civil War books. Only 13 of the now priceless originals still exist. For students of military campaigns, this book will be a disappointment. Heartsill's unit, the W.P. Lane Rangers of Texas, only participated in one engagement and that resulted in the capture of the entire command. Heartsill did, however, fight in the Battle of Chickamauga and his account of that bloody battle is probably the most stirring section of the book. The true value of 1491 Days is Heartsill's treatment of everyday life in the Confederacy, particularly west of the Mississippi River. Lane's Rangers spent the first year of the war patrolling the Texas frontier against Indian raids. Encountering only one sickly Apache woman during their entire stay on the frontier, the Texans yearned for duty against Yankees. Their transfer to Arkansas Point only resulted in more frustration. Shortly after arriving, they were captured with the rest of the garrison when the post fell to the Union Army. Following this disaster, Heartsill and his companions were shipped to Camp Butler as prisoners of war. Exchanged in 1863, the Rangers were assigned to various units in Bragg's Army of Tennessee. It was during this service that Heartsill participated in the Battle of Chickamauga. Resenting the "consolidation" of his unit and thoroughly detesting Bragg, Heartsill, along with many of his fellow Rangers, deserted. While making his way back to Texas, he gives an interesting account of everyday life in battle-scarred Tennessee and Mississippi. Reuniting with Lane's Rangers in Texas, Heartstill spent the remainder of the war guarding Union prisoners at Camp Ford in Tyler, Texas. He thus had the unique experience of being both a prisoner and a prison guard during the war. One unusal feature of 1491 Days are the photographs Heartsill accumulated for his book. Asking his fellow Rangers to submit photographs of themselves, Heartsill reproduced 100 copies of the 60 he received. Lacking a better method, he pasted them down, four to a page, with the name of each man printed below his photograph. Also included in 1491 Days are the service records of each member of Lane's Rangers and several photocopies of two camp newspapers printed by the Rangers during their service on the Texas frontier. Thousands of books have been written about the Civil War. Among them are a few that need to be reprinted once every 20 to 30 years for a new generation of readers. This narrative is one of those books.
__Paul V. Chiles, Civil War News.
Laid into each volume is a sheet from the original manuscript, both sides written entirely in Heartsill's hand.  Bound by hand using select goatskin imported from England and fine Italian bookcloth.  Binding designed and crafted by Michael A. Hogle.  Cover stamped in gold.  Extra illustrated with an oversized tipped-in photograph of Captain Sam Richardson in his leapard-skin britches, plus three Civil War maps by Heartsill never before published.  All original photographs reproduced.  Printed on Mohawk Superfine 70 lb. white-smooth, acid-free paper.  Type entirely reset and enlarged.  Complete new index.

COMPENDIUM OF THE CONFEDERACY Available only from Broadfoot's
  • by John Wright
  • Wilmington, NC: Broadfoot Publishing Company, 1989. First Edition. 8-1/2 x 11. Hard Cover. 2 volumes, 1340 pages.
  •    The most complete reference to Confederate writing ever published. A listing of every book, pamphlet and article ever published relating to the Confederacy. Each entry provides, where available, author, title, place, publisher, pages, wraps or hardback, brief note on content, and booksellers' prices with seller noted. It was a few years ago that the Civil War collector and researcher had only two major guides to Civil War literature, Charles E. Dornbusch's Military Biography of the Civil War and Messrs. Nevins, Robertson, and Wiley's Civil War Books, A Critical Bibliography. Both of these works are still in use and will stand the test of time even though revisions will always be needed. Since then, several more specialized works have appeared on the market as guides to the best in Union and Confederate literature. Most notable are Michael Mullins' The Union Bookshelf and Richard Harwell's In Tall Cotton.
A recent bibliography ventured into the unchartered, but extremely valuable territory of listing serial and periodical offerings to Civil War research: Gerold L. Cole's Civil War Eyewitnesses- An Annotated Bibliography of Books and Articles, 1955-1986. Professor Cole's sources include articles from one hundred serials and periodicals along with new independent works published since 1955. Now John H. Wright's Compendium of the Confederacy has arrived on the Civil War scene. Forty years of personal collecting and research are represented in these two massive volumes filled with over 20,000 entries. If we compare with the standards listed above, we note that Mr. Wright does not only list military titles in his work. He includes fiction, political, naval, and civilian entries. He gleans material from 200 serials and periodicals (Dornbusch used fifty). This thoroughness brings to light a most valuable and untapped resource; the state and local historical society publications and limited printings by small and private publishers. This, plus material extracted from the standard published Civil War and Confederate sources such as Confederate Military History, Confederate Veteran, Southern Historical Society Papers, Southern Bivouac, and Journal of Southern History are included. Each entry, listed in alphabetical order by author or title, includes place and date of publication, number of pages, notes on content, and booksellers' prices over the years. Wright, in addition to his own massive Confederate collection (now housed at Duke University), culled thousands of dealers' catalogs over the years.
When word got out about his work he received catalogs (some over a hundred years old) from the Universities of Texas, Alabama and Duke along with old established book dealers. Also, the Library of Congress Card Catalog was tapped. It became a challenge to try and find missing works from the Compendium of the Confederacy. I managed to find one book (after three months of scanning), William J. Jones' Christ in the Camp and several articles, notably those in Confederate Veteran by Colonel George T. Rogers of the 6th Virginia Infantry. However, time after time, obscure titles located to test the Compendium were found listed. . . . This is a tremendous new source of Confederate data. John Wright states in his introduction:  "An effort has been made to find every title possible on the Confederacy in hopes that some future researcher will complete a definitive bibliography." The author is modest. It would take the resources and staff of a large institution to match what has been done here. The importance of this work is obvious to collectors, genealogists, and persons involved in the study of this period of American history. If the price is beyond your budget do all you can to get this into your local school or community library. It will become a standard reference source for many years to come. We owe a deep debt of gratitude to Tom Broadfoot and Mr. John Wright for bringing this bibliographic treasure to print.

    What Does the Supplement contain?
SOLDIERS:  Names & Information __ Twice as many names as does the original Official Records and, whereas most of the names in the original Official Records are of men ranking major and above (think of the thousands of occurrences of Lee, Grant, Sherman, etc.), most of the names in the Supplement are ranked below major; it is in the lower ranks that names and information are hardest to come by.  Most of these citations provide the full name, rank, regiment, company, and often the location of the soldier at a particular time.  Hundreds of thousands of names have been researched and identified further than their initials, as far as possible.

PLACES:  Names & Information __ Thousands of creeks, crossroads, ferries, fords, mills, etc.  Our entries have been checked against the Official Record Atlas and identified, whenver possible; you can use these locale-specific names (i.e. Sweeden's Cove Creek) as a secondary source for research.

RECORDS OF EVENTS & ITINERARIES:  The Records of Events and Itineraries of the Units for both Union and Confederate military organizations, as transcribed from 299 reels of microfilm in the National Archives (225 reels Union and 74 reels Confederate) have been published alphabetically by state.  Under each state the regiments and companies are arranged numerically, with information for each unit presented chronologically.  Most regiments have substantial coverage of the day-by-day records of the regiments and companies__where they marched, the rations and arms, clothing, skirmishes, battles, etc.  Thus, if you are researching a battle and know the units involved, you can look in the Records of Events & Itineraries and find the unit reports on the battle down to the company level.

OFFICIAL REPORTS:  All the official reports, Union and Confederate, left out of the original publication.  The material is arranged exactly like the original Official Records, that is, chronological by subject (i.e., all the Gettysburg material will be under Gettysburg).  There are 12 volumes of Reports, including a cumulative, every name, place, subject comprehensive index.

THE INDEX:The whole set is completely and thoroughly indexed: every Name, Battle, Event, geographical location, etc.  Broadfoot Publishing Company is well known for the quality and depth of our indexes.  This index contains over 1,000,000 entries!
