Broadfoot Publishing has undertaken the task of providing researchers with a valuable tool with the printing of a supplement to the 128 volume Official Records. To be published in 100 volumes, the series is organized into four parts. The first twelve volumes provide reports “left out” of the original OR 's. Combing libraries, museums, archives and newspapers, the editors have uncovered reports listed as “Not Located,” not sent in, late, or sent in late, for both the Union and Confederate armies.
The second portion of the publication will be a Record of Events and Itineraries, organized by state. These volumes will cover individual regiments using official day-by-day records including movements, troop dispositions, supply receipts, organization, field and staff members, etc. The information contained in these sixty volumes, until now, has only been available on microfilm at the National Archives. The final volumes will include Correspondence, and Records of the Secret Service.
The series is chronologically arranged like the Official Records and is printed and bound to match the most recent printing of the complete set. Each of the four segments is also indexed.
Broadfoot Publishing is to be commended for its continued effort to update and publish Civil War history. The Supplement to the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies uncovers an enormous amount of new material and will be extremely useful to the student and researcher .
